The hiring freeze isn't temporary, it's your new normal
Tech companies didn't pause hiring to save money, they paused it because AI convinced them they don't need you.
Every sales leader in ANZ is telling you the hiring freeze is temporary. Market conditions. Macro headwinds. We'll be back to normal hiring in Q3.
They're lying. Not maliciously, but they're still wrong.
Microsoft didn't freeze cloud and sales hiring because of a rough quarter. They froze it because someone in Redmond ran the numbers and realised Copilot could handle 40% of what their mid-market AEs were doing. Outbound cadences? Automated. Discovery calls? AI can run those now. Pipeline forecasting? There's a model for that.
The math changed. Permanently.
Here's what this means for your career: the bar just got higher, and the runway got shorter.
If you're an SDR banking on a promotion to AE in 18 months, that timeline just stretched to 24, maybe 36. Companies are keeping fewer, better-performing reps and letting AI handle the volume. If you're not in the top quartile of your team, you're not getting promoted, you're getting automated.
If you're an AE, your patch is about to get "optimised." When headcount is frozen but revenue targets aren't, territory sizes shrink and quotas rise. The rep who was managing 40 accounts is now managing 65. "Do more with less" isn't a temporary strategy anymore, it's the operating model.
And if you're job hunting? The roles that do open will have 200+ applicants because everyone else got the same email about "pausing external recruitment." Comp negotiations are dead. Take the offer or someone else will.
The brutal truth: tech sales isn't returning to 2021 hiring levels because those levels were never sustainable. They were a zero-rate-policy fever dream. We hired thousands of SDRs because money was free and growth was the only metric that mattered.
Now money costs something again, and boards want efficiency, not expansion.
So what do you do?
Get better, fast. Move upmarket before AI eats your segment. Build skills that can't be automated, like complex stakeholder management and strategic account planning. And for the love of god, stop waiting for the market to bounce back.
It already did. This is the bounce.
