Bower raises $2M pre-seed, founder-led sales motion targets research labs

Gold Coast AI startup Bower closed $2M pre-seed led by TEN13. Four founders, 1-10 employees, no sales team yet. COO/CRO James Boysons running go-to-market. Early customers include Mount Sinai Hospital and Southern Cross University. Worth watching: enterprise software veterans building for scientists, not horizontal AI.

Gold Coast startup Bower closed a $2 million pre-seed round led by Brisbane VC TEN13, with backing from Admiralty Capital Group, Edale Capital, and angels including Heidi Health CTO Yu Liu.

The company builds AI-powered smart glasses for scientists, capturing what happens during lab experiments: observations, method changes, troubleshooting. Think lab notebook meets enterprise workflow tool. CEO Michelle MacRae (ex-Microsoft AI, Google, Dovetail) calls it an "operating system for research."

The sales angle: Bower is 1-10 employees, four founders, no commercial team yet. COO/CRO James Boysons (ex-EQL) is running go-to-market. This is classic founder-led sales: former enterprise software talent selling into research institutions before building out a proper sales org.

Early customers include Mount Sinai Hospital (New York), Mass Affinity, Bloodless Diagnostics, and Southern Cross University. That is a credible enterprise logo list for a pre-seed AI startup.

Funding context: PitchBook shows prior seed rounds in 2020 and 2022, plus a 2025 seed/grant round. This is not Bower's first capital, which means the $2M is scaling an existing product, not validating concept.

Why this matters for ANZ sales:

  • Hiring timeline: Pre-seed to Series A usually means 6-12 months before sales hires. If Bower follows standard SaaS playbook, expect SDR/AE roles in 2027.
  • Comp benchmarks: Enterprise AI sales in ANZ typically pays $100-120k base for AEs, $140-180k OTE. Queensland market runs 10-15% below Sydney/Melbourne rates.
  • Founder pedigree: Microsoft, Google, Atlassian, Xero backgrounds signal they understand enterprise sales cycles. That matters when you are selling into hospitals and universities.

The product is wearables for lab scientists. The GTM motion is founder-led enterprise. The hiring question is when, not if. If you have sold into healthcare or research institutions, worth keeping Bower on your radar for 2027.
