OpenAI has handed out more than $5.5 million in API credits to Australian startups since opening in Sydney in December 2025. Recipients include two Year 12 students building commercial AI platforms.

Year 12 founder Peter Starodubtsev is using OpenAI's Codex for Petrex, a gaming and advertising startup that has secured six-figure pre-seed funding and partnerships with Samsung and NBC Universal Studios. Fellow student Steve Zhu is building Workwise, an SME-focused platform.

OpenAI marked the milestone at a Sydney Founder Day event attended by roughly 150 builders. The company lists Australia as a top 10 global market for developers building on its platform.

What this means for sales teams

OpenAI is running a credit-led growth model in ANZ, not a traditional enterprise sales motion. The startup credits program seeds usage among SMEs and early-stage companies, building a pipeline that can convert to paid API customers as they scale.

This approach suits OpenAI's current structure: the company is still building out its commercial org. TechCrunch reported in August 2026 that OpenAI replaced CRO Denise Dresser after nine months, appointing Dali Rajic (formerly president and COO at Wiz) to the top revenue role. CNBC reported the company was expected to nearly double headcount to around 8,000 by end of 2026.

For context: OpenAI closed a $122 billion funding round in March 2026 at an $852 billion valuation, with monthly revenue around $2 billion at the time. Public reporting put 2025 revenue at $13.1 billion, with annualized revenue in early 2026 at roughly $24 billion.

Market reality

The credits program is pipeline development, not charity. OpenAI is betting on usage-based expansion: seed credits with startups, convert them as they grow, land enterprise deals through proof of concept rather than outbound AE motion.

For ANZ sales professionals watching AI tooling adoption: this is how the big AI platforms are entering the market. Credits first, sales org later. Worth noting if you are selling into or competing with companies building on OpenAI's stack.
