The Pattern

Global companies are buying Australian specialist SMEs at pace. STRABAG is acquiring WA road surfacing business KEE Surfacing. AtkinsRéalis bought defence consultancy Coras. Metso purchased Newcastle industrial automation business MRA Automation. Sweden's AxFlow bought into water systems business Dowdens Group. France's Sia acquired transformation consultancy Seven Consulting. New Zealand's Beca bought regional Queensland environmental and planning consultancy CQG Consulting.

Seven deals in 2026. The pattern is clear.

Why These Businesses

Australian specialist SMEs sit in the sweet spot for cross-border acquirers: established, profitable enough to transact, but small enough to avoid mega-cap premiums. The target range is roughly $1m-$50m in enterprise value, with most deals clustering below $20m.

Buyers want what takes years to build: specialist staff, established client relationships, and local market knowledge. CQG director Patrice Brown said reputation and relationships took over 20 years to build. "You can't just do that overnight."

Acquirers are looking at infrastructure, defence, energy, resources, insurance brokerage, professional services, manufacturing, logistics, healthcare, FMCG, and digital businesses. The common thread: specialist capability that is easier to buy than build.

The Buyer Pool

Local strategics, private equity, offshore corporates, and international investors seeking Australian platforms or export capability. Reuters reported in September 2026 that foreign investors and private equity have been driving takeover interest across Australian companies this year.

Many of these businesses are owned by founders nearing succession. That makes them acquisition-ready even without formal funding history. Advisory firms actively market this segment to local and international buyers.

Sales Angle

For sales teams at these SMEs, an acquisition often means integration into a larger go-to-market structure. Worth watching: how comp changes post-acquisition, whether territory gets carved up, and what happens to existing client relationships. Enterprise buyers want the team and the book of business. The quota usually follows.
