What Happened
A nationwide Telstra outage hit before 5am Wednesday, knocking out mobile calls, data, and internet services across Australia. By 7am AEST, DownDetector logged over 7,000 reports. Customers of Telstra resellers (Boost Mobile, Belong, Aldi Mobile, Everyday Mobile, Tangerine) were also affected.
Businesses reported disruptions to EFTPOS and internet services. Some retailers said they could not process card payments at all.
Impact on Sales Teams
For sales teams, this is what a single point of failure looks like. No mobile network means:
- No outbound calls to prospects or customers
- No CRM access if you are running Salesforce or HubSpot on mobile data
- No Slack, no email, no Zoom calls
- Territory reps in the field are offline
If your AEs are driving between meetings and relying on Telstra for comms, they went dark. If your SDRs are dialling from mobile hot spots, their morning call block just evaporated.
The Backup Question
This is the conversation every sales ops team should have today: what is your backup when the primary network goes down?
Options worth considering:
- Dual SIM setups with a secondary carrier (Optus, Vodafone)
- Office landlines for critical outbound calling
- Offline CRM access or cached lead lists
- Pre-downloaded collateral for field teams
Telstra is Australia's largest telco, with A$22.71 billion in revenue and 30,553 employees globally. When it goes down, a lot of ANZ business grinds to a halt.
Business Continuity Reality Check
Most sales teams do not have a documented plan for network outages. This is the wake-up call. If your quota depends on being able to reach customers, and your network is a single point of failure, you are carrying unpriced risk.
Worth noting: Telstra has not disclosed the cause of the outage or provided an estimated restoration time as of 7am AEST. Businesses are posting on social media asking for updates.
The takeaway: your comp depends on uptime. Build redundancy or accept the downside when infrastructure fails.
